Elements of Strength Of Materials | By Timoshenko Young | 5th Edition | EWP Publication ( English Medium ).
Theory of Mechanisms and Machines" is a comprehensive textbook authored by Amitabha Ghosh and Asok Kumar Mallik, published by Affiliated East-West Press. This revised edition serves as an essential resource for students and professionals in mechanical engineering, focusing on the fundamental principles and applications of mechanisms and machines.
Key Features:
In-Depth Content: The book offers detailed coverage of topics such as kinematic analysis, dimensional synthesis of linkages, and dynamic force and motion analysis, providing readers with a solid foundation in the subject.
Rigorous Approach: It treats several topics with a rigorous approach, requiring a moderate background in mechanics and mathematics, which enhances the analytical skills of the readers.
Practical Applications: The text includes real-world examples and applications, bridging the gap between theoretical concepts and practical implementation in machine design.
Comprehensive Illustrations: Numerous diagrams and illustrations are provided to facilitate the understanding of complex mechanisms and their functions.
Exercises and Problems: Each chapter concludes with a set of problems and exercises, enabling readers to test their comprehension and apply the concepts learned.
Summary Of The Book
Elements Of Strength Of Materials is the reference text material designed for undergraduate engineering graduates specializing in civil engineering. The book deals with mechanics of materials, which tells us about how objects withstand strain and stress and rely upon geometrical and physical considerations of deformations. The study of the strength of materials sometimes refers to different methods used to calculate stresses in structures like a column, shaft or a beam. A newer set of examples and problems have replaced the older ones, along with answers to all the problems.
Elements Of Strength Of Materials elaborates on the concepts of Strain and Stress, complications involved in the Nonlinear Strain-stress Behaviour, Limit Design or Plastic Analysis, Pure Shear, Stresses in Thin-walled Pressure Vessels, Analysis of Biaxial Stress, Mohr's Circle, Bending Stresses, Shearing Stress, Fundamentals of Bending Theory, Bending of Beams, Plane Stress, Moment-Area Theorem, Limit Analysis of Statically Indeterminate Beams, Method of Superposition, Notion of Principal Stresses and Theory of Columns.
Other topics covered in the book include Mechanical Properties of Materials, Analysis of Plane Strain, Uses of Strain Rosettes, Compression Tests, Calculating Deflections of Beams, Theorem of Three Moments, Differential Equation of Elastic Line, Secant Formula, Castigliano's Theorem and its Applications, Tension, Compression and Shear, Stresses in Beams, Impact Tests, Biaxial Tension and Compression, Torsion, Deflection of Beams, Moments of Inertia of Plane Areas, Analysis of Plane Stress, and Statically Indeterminate Beams.
About The Authors:
D. H. Young was a renowned professor and author who specialised in the fields of civil engineering, structural engineering and applied mechanics. He has also written Engineering Mechanics: Statics and Dynamics, Vibration Problems in Engineering, Theory of Structures and Advanced Dynamics.
He was awarded for excellence in the instruction of engineering students by the American Society for Engineering Education. His lectures and his writing depicted clarity in precision of meaning and expressions. His works have been translated into thirty-two languages, and have been updated to five editions. He has also written papers and technical reports. His hobbies were photography, collecting and repairing old Victor and Edison phonographs, reading, and golf. He died at the age of 75 from cancer.
S. P. Timoshenko, the father of modern engineering mechanics, was an Ukrainian engineer and an author who specialised in subjects like strength of materials, elasticity and engineering mechanics. His other works included Theory of Plates and Shells, Advanced Dynamics, History of The Strength of Materials, As I Remember and Engineering Education in Russia.
Born in Shpotivka, Timoshenko did his schooling at Romny and graduated from Petersburg State Transport University. He then relocated to the US where he worked as a professor at Stanford University. He was awarded the D. I. Zhuravski prize of the St. Petersburg Ways of Communication Institute for his excellence in the field. He passed away in 1972.
