About the Author:
Prof. R.D. Singh is a distinguished Academician and Mining Engineer and embodied in him, is the rare combination of academic and field experience. After graduating from the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, he underwent advanced training in coal mine mechanisation in the UK. He entered the coal mining industry and worked in the coal mines of the erstwhile M/s. MacNeill and Barry Ltd. for nearly ten years in different managerial capacities rising to the position of Group Agent and was responsible for the management and technical direction and control of a number of large deep coal mines. While working in the coal mines, he carried out investigations in the efficient use of explosives in Indian coal mines and took his M.Sc. (Mining) degree. Equipped with extensive and varied field experience in large coal mines, he switched over to the academic profession as Professor and Head of the newly set up Department of Mining Engineering at the MBM Engineering College, Jodhpur. He later moved to the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad as Senior Professor and Head of the Department of Coal Mining and Mining Machinery. Retiring after about two decades of distinguished service at the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, he joined University of Jodhpur again fora short spell of time as Visiting Professor and later joined the Kothagudem School of Mines, Kothagudem, Osmania University as Professor of Mining Engineering. fora number of years he was entrusted with the additional responsibility of Chairman, Board of Courses and Studies. Whilst at the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad he was selected as UNESCO Specialist in Geomechanics and later as UNESCO Consultant and worked at the Escuela Tecnica Superior de Ingenieros de Minas, Oviedo, Spain and in that capacity he built up at Oviedo, laboratories in geomechanics and designed postgraduate studies and research in geomechanics.

As an academician, Prof. Singh has played a major role in designing the teaching and research programmes in the mining engineering discipline in the country. He has conducted/guided research in various aspects of mining engineering and has published numerous technical and research papers in Indian and foreign journals of repute and participated in several National and International conferences and symposia, etc. He is the recipient of a number of prestigious awards forhis contribution to the field of mining engineering and has been member of high level expert committees set up by the Government.

He has widely travelled abroad and visited mines, mining research centres and the University Mining Departments in several countries. He has been actively associated with and has held high positions in professional institutions and is a Chartered Engineer (UK), Fellow of the Institution of Mining Engineers (UK), Member of International Organising Committee of the World Mining Congress (Warsaw), Member of the Mining, Geological and Metallurgical Institute of India and Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India).
